What's growing in the hay fields?

We are cutting our 3rd hay crop of the season now, turning it into square bales for the animals to eat during the winter.

Common Vetch blooming in the field

Pictured above are two common plants found in our hay fields: Red Clover and Common Vetch.

These plants are important for the health of our soil. Both plants are legumes, which means they work with helpful bacteria in the soil to pull nitrogen from air pockets in the soil and convert it to a bioavailable form of nitrogen for the plant to use.

Here is why we’re happy to see them out in the field:

  • Red Clover: Clover isn't just great protein for the animals; its deep taproots help break up compacted soil.

  • Common Vetch: This plant fills in the gaps between grasses, producing rich, high-protein feed while putting nitrogen back into the soil.

Legumes like these keep our forage high quality, and keep our soil healthy and active for seasons to come.

Nutrients Found in the Soil

To grow quality forage we must ensure that our soils are healthy. A few important nutrients found in the soil include phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

We follow our farm's Nutrient Management Plan to ensure we protect the environment and the health of our crops. That includes testing our soils to determine how we should manage nutrients for the health of the soil and the quality of forage we grow.

If you are interested in purchasing square bales send a text to 802-731-0218 or email zoe@ledgenearfarm.com.
