Bird Friendly Maple Program
Last week a group visited the farm from Audubon Vermont and Northwoods Stewardship Center. They inventoried the bird habitat features in our sugar woods, specifically chiefly, standing and downed deadwood, understory and midstory cover, and invasive plants. Audubon Vermont will now write up a habitat management plan which describes the features that meet targets for their Bird Friendly Maple Program, and will recommend management strategies for maintaining and improving the bird friendliness of our sugarbush. We hope to add these recommendations to our Forest Management Plan.

New Calves
Two new Charolais calves were born last week, both on the same day. There are now 11 calves that have been born on the farm this summer. We are excitedly awaiting the births of 5 more.
Pictured to the left is Charolais mom Jasmine with her bull calf. Heuchera the angus is 11 years old and an experienced mom. She is helping Jasmine, a first time mom, clean the calf.
Sometimes veterinary emergencies arise on the farm. After giving birth one of our Charolais, Camellia, experienced complications associated with dystocia (another name for a difficult or obstructed labor). Sometimes first calf heifers have trouble giving birth, especially if the calf is large. We called Cold Hollow Veterinary and they came to the farm quickly. They ran an IV, gave her some pain medication, and did a physical exam. We are thankful for their help in these situations.
